The Salvage Game (in Nevada)

Legally speaking, under the NV statue it reads as follows:
482.098 1. “Rebuilt vehicle” means a vehicle:
(a) That is a salvage vehicle as that term is defined in NRS 487.770, excluding a nonrepairable vehicle; or

(we believe there to be an error on the State website)

Sec. 20. Chapter 487 of NRS is hereby amended by adding thereto the provisions set forth as sections 21 and 22 of this act.
Sec. 21. “Rebuilt vehicle” has the meaning ascribed to it in paragraph (b) of subsection 1 of NRS 482.098.
Sec. 22. 1. A rebuilt vehicle may not be registered until it:
(a) Has been inspected by a garageman who operates a garage that is registered pursuant to NRS 487.560, by the owner of a body shop licensed pursuant to NRS 487.630 or by an employee of such a garage or body shop; and
(b) Is certified pursuant to subsection 2 that the components which have been replaced have been installed properly and are functional and operate safely in accordance with the standards of the manufacturer.

2. If a garageman or owner of a body shop, or an employee thereof, who performs an inspection pursuant to subsection 1 finds that the components replaced on a rebuilt vehicle have been installed properly and are functional and operate safely in accordance with the standards of the manufacturer, the garageman, owner or employee shall complete and sign a certificate of inspection, on a form prescribed by the state agency, attesting to the fact that the replaced components have been installed properly and are functional and operate safely in accordance with the standards of the manufacturer.

So in layman's terms. In Nevada, when a vehicle has a Rebuilt Title, it's means the vehicle has had some sort of salvage history, the vehicle was fixed than inspected by a licensed body shop or mechanic shop, then finally inspected by an authorized rep from the Nevada DMV. Check out the salvage section to see why a car gets labled "salvage"

Salvage, in terms of a vehicle, means the vehicle has experienced a "Total Loss"

Legally speaking the Nevada statue reads as follows;
"487.790 1. “Total loss vehicle” means a motor vehicle:
(a) Of a type which is subject to registration; and
(b) Which has been wrecked, destroyed or otherwise damaged to such an extent that the cost of repair , not including any cost associated with painting any portion of the vehicle, is 65 percent or more of the fair market value of the vehicle immediately before it was wrecked, destroyed or otherwise damaged.
2. The term does not include :
(a) A nonrepairable vehicle ;
(b) A motor vehicle which is 10 model years old or older and which, to restore the vehicle to its condition before it was wrecked, destroyed or otherwise damaged and regardless of cost, requires the replacement of only:

(1) The hood;
(2) The trunk lid;
(3) Two or fewer of the following parts or assemblies, which may be bolted or unbolted:
(I) Doors;
(II) A grill assembly;
(III) A bumper assembly;
(IV) A headlight assembly; or
(V) A taillight assembly; or
(4) Any combination of subparagraph (1), (2) or (3); or
(c) A motor vehicle, regardless of the age of the vehicle, for which the cost to repair the vehicle, not including any cost associated with painting any portion of the vehicle, is less than 65 percent of the fair market value of the vehicle immediately before the vehicle was wrecked, destroyed or otherwise damaged.
3. For the purposes of this section, the model year of manufacture is calculated based on a year beginning on January 1 of the calendar year in which the damage occurs."

In layman's terms. In Nevada any vehicle that has or can potentially obtain a salvage title by the following

  • Collision most common
  • Theft
  • Biohazard/Chemical
  • Fire
  • Flood
  • Hail (common in the East Coast and Colorado)
  • Vandalism

If the vehicle went through one of the above events, more than likely it rendered the title Salvage which means the vehicle cannot be registered in the state of Nevada until it becomes "Rebuilt"
Licensed Dealers are not permited to sale Salvage Titled Vehicles to Nevada Residents, Unless it as completed all prerequisets to obtain a Rebuilt Title.

If you find yourself being offered a vehicle with a non-repairable Title and you plan on driving it around. Run the other way.

Non-Repairable Title vehicles have been classified as for Parts-Only.
